EFOL was initiated by Leif Strömquist in 1994 as a summer activity for European foresters, following the example of the similar winter event for European foresters, EFNS, which had been established in Germany as early as 1969.
Mr. Strömquist found a receptive attitude toward his proposal while working in Latvia, and together with Mr. Martins Gaigals from the Latvian State Forest Service, the first EFOL was organized in August 1994 in Strenči, Latvia.
The competitions follow the rules of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), but EFOL has its own age group classifications for both men and women.
EFOL follows the concept of EFNS, thereby allowing participation by forestry workers, employees in the wood industry, individuals with a forestry education, forest owners, forestry contractors, and their immediate family members.
